Life Sliding - A Young Adult Book by S. L. Mauldin
A timely coming of age young adult book dealing with hate, stereotyping, death, and bullying as three youths become young adults. A story for everyone.
An affluent teenager in the midst of an identity crisis is sent to serve at a summer camp where he collides with an emotional girl with multi-colored fingernails and then is forced to face someone from his past.
AS GAVIN’S JUNIOR YEAR comes to a close, he faces an inner conflict with his status as the most popular kid in high school. It’s not lost on his father, who sensed for some time that his overly indulged son needs redirection. Making matters worse for Gavin, his dad sends him away for the summer to assist at a camp for children with special needs.
Arriving at camp Life Me Up, Gavin is suddenly forced to dabble in a world less familiar. After his first uncomfortable encounter with a strange girl with multi-colored fingernails, who refuses to waiver his arrogant behavior, Gavin comes face to face with a person from the past, which leaves him uneasy.
Inevitably, three people clash and collide, but when tragedy strikes, they come to an understanding regarding their differences. Becoming a young adult, Gavin faces a summer of harsh lessons in reality. Once he crosses the bridge from a self-inflicted prison to the road to freedom, Gavin and his new friends implement a strategy to stir up the social order when they return to school in the fall.
Because of one jaded person jumping to conclusions, the plan backfires. Will they be able to survive the fallout of what they’ve put into motion?

Book Review : Young Adult Fiction

“A new journey is never promised, so it is important to appreciate the one you are on. Every heartbeat, every heartbeat. Heartbeats, both good and bad. As we slide through life let us remember.” Life Sliding is a fantastic book to read. Constantly leaving you on edge to keep turning pages and keep reading until the book is done. It is a terrific coming of age story that tackles many issues.
Throughout the story, the characters had dealt with many things, including hate, stereotyping, identity crisis, death and bullying. Leaving them to cope with such issues, had lead them down paths of discovering themselves and allowing them to be their true selves. In the book, Gavin is just a teenager who is from a school where most of the students parents have high paying jobs and the children are always provided with everything they ever wanted.
From the start, Gavin struggled internally as a small part of him had known he didn’t belong with the friends he had surrounded himself with. Learning that, there came a push. In that push, it had came in the form of being signed up by his father, for a summer-long gig as a junior counsellor at ‘Camp Lift Me Up’. First, Gavin hated the camp but it had quickly turned into his awakening point and he learned what responsibility, loss and true friendships really was.
Life Sliding is definitely an excellent read and I’d recommend the book to anyone. Anyone can easily relate and can totally understand the entire coming of age and can relate to what happens in the grown up world. I could definitely relate a lot to Gavin in the book and understand his feelings and the way he had to go through everything and how things had changed and gave him quite the awakening when he was at ‘Camp Lift Me Up’. Life is quite the adventure and the coming of age aspect of it, is a huge part that ends up leaving you tackling many issues in life. It leaves you with many things to cope with that will lead you down many paths of which you learn to discover yourself and to be allowed to be your true self.
Definitely a 10/10 and worth checking out! :)
